How coaches typically progress
British Sumo develops coaches so sessions stay safe, structured, and aligned with the UK pathway into domestic and international competition. Exact award names, dates, and entry requirements can change — confirm with EnglandSumo or British Sumo before you book a course.
- Assisted coaching — work alongside an experienced coach, learn session structure, and support beginner-friendly training.
- Independent club coaching — deliver regular club sessions and matside support at domestic events once you meet current British Sumo requirements (including safeguarding and first-aid expectations where applicable).
- Higher-level / national pathway — experienced coaches may progress toward higher competition support under British Sumo oversight.

British Sumo coaching levels
Coach development in the UK runs through British Sumo, which certifies three coaching levels: Assistant Coach, Lead Coach, and Master Coach. British Sumo runs the certification — EnglandSumo encourages and supports coaches in England. See sumo coaching levels in England for a summary of each level's responsibilities and requirements.
How coaching certification is approved
Coaches or aspiring coaches are proposed to the British Sumo board via the EnglandSumo board — they don't apply to British Sumo directly. The process is:
- Nominate. An existing coach or EnglandSumo official gives an aspiring coach's name to the EnglandSumo executive, together with the level they are aiming for.
- Propose. EnglandSumo adds an agenda item to the next British Sumo board meeting to approve the coaching certification.
- Convert. Once British Sumo's board approves, the new coach converts to an EnglandSumo coaching membership, which gives access to the first aid training, DBS checks, safeguarding education and coaching insurance they need.
Level 1 (Assistant Coach) can be proposed in advance of every criterion being met — for example before First Aid is complete — so approval can get underway early and the remaining training is completed inside the coaching membership. Email info@englandsumo.com to start the process, whether you want to coach or want to propose someone.
